About Youguang

A Chinese School Created for Overseas Learners

Youguang Chinese School was founded in 2022 with a clear purpose: to create a better way for children growing up abroad to learn Chinese.

Children learning Chinese in Canada have different language environments, learning schedules and educational needs from students living in China. For this reason, we do not simply reproduce a mainland Chinese language-arts program. Instead, we have developed a localized curriculum based on the real learning needs of overseas children.

Our goal is not for students to memorize Chinese temporarily. We want them to gradually develop the ability to recognize, understand, read and use Chinese, and to express their own ideas, experiences and feelings with confidence.

From our first small class to a growing community of families, Youguang has remained committed to one principle: every course should be carefully designed, every lesson should be thoughtfully prepared, and every child should be treated with professionalism, patience and responsibility.

Our Curriculum

A Complete, Leveled Chinese-Language Program

Youguang Chinese School uses its own independently developed curriculum and teaching materials.

Led by founder and curriculum director Yang Guang, the curriculum was developed with the support of experienced scholars and educators in Chinese language, linguistics and elementary language education.

The program is organized into a clear progression, beginning with early Chinese literacy and continuing through advanced reading, writing and expression.

Each level includes coordinated learning materials such as:

Student textbooks

Practice workbooks

Character-writing books

Leveled reading materials

Online homework activities

Speaking and expression exercises

Chinese culture content

The curriculum helps students develop listening, speaking, character recognition, reading comprehension, writing and communication skills in a gradual and connected way.

Designed for Children Growing Up Abroad

Appropriate Pace, Clear Progression and Meaningful Content

微信图片_20260803132125_753_35.jpg

Many Chinese textbooks were originally written for children living in a Chinese-speaking environment. Overseas learners often have less exposure to Chinese outside the classroom and may have very different levels of listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Our curriculum takes these differences into account.

High-frequency characters are introduced systematically and reinforced through words, sentences, stories and reading activities. New learning is connected to previously taught content so that students build a stable foundation rather than memorize isolated characters.

The pace is challenging but realistic. Students are expected to make meaningful progress without being overwhelmed by excessive copying, unfamiliar content or unrealistic learning expectations.

More Than Character Recognition

From Literacy to Reading and Expression

Character recognition is essential, but it is not the final goal of learning Chinese.

At Youguang, students learn to use characters in vocabulary, sentences, reading, conversation and writing. As they progress, the curriculum gradually moves from basic literacy toward:

Reading comprehension

Story retelling

Structured speaking

Discussion and presentation

Paragraph and composition writing

Cultural understanding

We want students not only to recognize Chinese, but also to understand what they read and communicate what they think.

Our Approach to Pinyin and Writing

Building Direct and Sustainable Chinese Literacy

Pinyin is taught as a useful tool for pronunciation, but students are also trained to recognize Chinese characters directly.

We avoid allowing children to depend entirely on pinyin when reading. The long-term goal is for students to see a character or word and connect it directly with its meaning.

Our writing approach follows the principle of recognition before extensive writing. Students first build sufficient familiarity with characters and then gradually learn strokes, stroke order, radicals and character structure.

Writing practice is purposeful and age-appropriate rather than based on excessive repetition.

Chinese Culture in Context

Learning the Language and Understanding Its Cultural World

Language and culture are closely connected.

Chinese cultural content is introduced progressively through stories, festivals, geography, traditions, historical figures, literature and age-appropriate cultural topics.

Students begin with familiar and concrete material, then gradually develop a deeper understanding of the cultural context behind the language.

Our aim is not to ask children to memorize cultural facts. It is to help them understand, discuss and connect with Chinese culture in ways that are meaningful to their lives in Canada.

Expression, Drama and the Stage

Using Drama to Strengthen Chinese Communication

微信图片_20260731213238_656_35.jpg

Chinese-language learning is the core of Youguang’s educational program.

Speaking, storytelling, role-play, drama and stage activities are used to support that core. They give students meaningful situations in which to use the vocabulary, sentence patterns and ideas they have learned in class.

Through these activities, students can improve:

Spoken Chinese

Pronunciation and vocal expression

Reading comprehension

Confidence in public speaking

Listening and teamwork

Emotional and creative expression

Our purpose is not to train every child to become a professional performer. Drama is an educational method that helps Chinese move from the textbook into real communication.

Classroom presentations, textbook plays and annual stage events allow students to experience Chinese as a living language—one they can use to tell stories, communicate ideas and create something together.

Our Teachers

Professional, Responsible and Committed to Every Child

Teachers are central to the quality of education at Youguang.

Our teachers bring relevant academic backgrounds, teaching experience and a strong understanding of children. They work within a shared curriculum, participate in lesson planning and professional development, and follow clear learning goals for each level.

We value teachers who are not only knowledgeable, but also patient, energetic and attentive to individual students.

A good teacher does more than deliver content. A good teacher helps a child develop interest, confidence and the willingness to continue learning.

How Children Learn at Youguang

A Connected Learning System

Youguang’s program connects classroom instruction with guided practice at home.

Students attend one two-hour class each week during the regular school year. Classroom teaching is supported by online homework and review activities designed to reinforce key characters, vocabulary, reading and lesson content.

The purpose of homework is not simply to increase a child’s workload. It is to provide short, regular and effective review so that learning continues between classes.

Parents can also better understand what their child is learning and how the course is progressing.

What We Hope Students Will Achieve

Through long-term and systematic learning, we hope students will be able to:

Understand and participate in age-appropriate Chinese conversations

Build a strong and stable foundation in Chinese characters

Read Chinese texts appropriate to their age and level

Express experiences, ideas and feelings clearly in Chinese

Develop confidence in Chinese writing

Understand Chinese culture in a thoughtful and meaningful way

Maintain the interest and ability to continue using Chinese in the future

Our goal is not simply for children to have studied Chinese.

Our goal is for them to truly understand, use and possess the language.

Our School Community

A Place to Learn, Participate and Grow

Youguang provides children with opportunities to use Chinese beyond ordinary classroom exercises.

School activities may include reading, storytelling, cultural workshops, classroom presentations, textbook plays, field trips, summer programs and stage events.

These experiences give children reasons to communicate, cooperate and create in Chinese. They also help students see that Chinese is not only a subject they study. It is a language through which they can connect with people, culture and their own ideas.
